PETOSKEY STONE FAQ: This interesting stone is a variety of Calcite that was formed by the fossilization of ancient coral, Hexagonaria (having 6 sides), that lived 350 million years ago when the northern part of Michigan was covered in warm sea water. The coral lived in shallow waters and today’s fossil often includes ancient silt and mud. Petoskey Stones are found on many beaches of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron ~ all the way from Traverse City to Alpena. In 1965 the State of Michigan adopted the Petoskey stone as Michigan's state stone.
