In the raw, howlite is found in cauliflower-like masses. This adaptable stone is named for Henry How, a 19th century mineralogist, who found it first in Nova Scotia. Howlite is soft and takes on rich hues of color when it's dyed. It is an inexpensive alternative to more costly stones. It's natural color is white. Dyed, it looks like lapis lazuli, red coral or a turquoise.
